Seting Goals Step by Step

Part 1

Now that the year is just beginning, it would be a great time to start setting goals and plans for this New Year! I am a big fan of plans o BIG goals. I am also, rehabbing from procrastination.  Yep, it can be done! Baby steps and motivation are key to get to our finish line.

When I started about two years ago writing my plans and goals, I did so on a very little scale because I felt the objectives were too much to handle. The idea is for everyone to be able to do it, to get organized and to accomplish all those goals that may seem very hard to achieve right now. I promise it is not if you focus on the small steps first.

Our first step will be to check were we are in different areas of our lives and start setting our main goals and smaller goals to get to the bigger ones.

There are 5 important areas in our lives:

Personal

Spiritual

Family

Business/Professional

Financial

If you are a parent, you may think that family is the most important of all… Well, It took me a while to understand that, if I don’t take care of myself, I am in no position to take care of anyone else. Having said that… you guessed it!

Let’s set our Personal Goals first. We need to make sure we are physically and mentally healthy. Just imagine if you get sick and then you need to take care of someone else. It does not sound fun to me!

For instance, if we have been trying to loose some weight this is the time to analyze why we are not getting there. If we are always busy and have no time to exercise or eat a home cooked meal, here is were we start setting small goals.

Ex.

Personal Goals

Main physical health goal: Loose 20lbs by the end of this year.

Small goals:

  • Cook at home at least twice/week
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks
  • No fried food.
  • Walk 15min/day, at least 3 times/week.

What about our emotional Well Being? Any steps we take to control of our lives, might at points, seem too hard to confront.  However, this is why we set small steps. If it turns out to feel too hard to move forward, then we set smaller steps.

Lets check our situation. Do you think you feel supported? Do you feel stressed? Do you need some time to focus? or just a break?

This to me is a bit hard to explain, so I am using a personal example. I like many of you, have dreams and goals that at some point I forgot. I got immerse in kids and family and just life and I completely forgot that I wanted to accomplish things in my life, by MYSELF!

Even the easier things looked hard to do and it seems like there was not enough time for a little break. Well, that is when I started working on organizing everything around me. If time was a problem, I had to tackle that area. I took a little free class on time management and check on pinterest for ideas (it doesn’t matter how busy you are, you always have time for pinterest :D)

There are some ideas on time management I will share with you in a different post.  Now let me give you some examples of goals for your mental health and I will wrap-up this post to continue on a later post with the Spiritual area of our life.

Ex.

Personal Goals

Main mental health goal: Feel more tranquil and under control.

Small goals:

  • Set a schedule
  • Start using a calendar
  • Prepare a meals menu of at least 4 days.
  • Block time for MYSELF on my calendar @ least 15 minutes/day

For our plans to be effective, we need to set specific times and goals, use numbers, time or any tool to help you measure your goals Ex. Days per week/month/year, minutes/hours, pounds…  If you are not used to do something, start with a little goal like 5 minutes walking 2 times per week.  If you really want to change any aspect of your life or yourself, start any day at any time, just start. The smaller change will be more that no change at all.

You can’t expect a big change in your life, if you keep doing the same things over and over again.
